Media has long been considered the also-ran subject in British schools. Since its inception in the late 60's it has been the butt of jokes and jibes, never allowed to occupy the same space as legitimate subjects.
But....
Is it time for change?
Is it time to recognise the value and importance of Media Studies in our media saturated world? No longer does theatre portray our humanity or literature reach the masses. The new media is on the march and it is all consuming in its breadth and scope. we look to Twitter for our philosophy and Facebook for our community; we seek out blogs to feed our desire to know and Instagram informs our aesthetic. As Malcolm X said,
“The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”
Isn't it time Media Studies recognised its own importance and claimed its own value?
